Making Money Online – Why Affiliate Programs Are A Fast Track To Marketing Success

As an Internet marketing newbie-or rookie-it’s important that you think through how it is that you want to make money before you build your site. In fact, Internet marketing is not that much different from traditional marketing. That is to say, the best way to start is with a marketing plan that includes factors such as your market niche, your objectives, strategies and tactics-or how it is that you actually intend to make money.

While there are a number of different ways to make money with Internet marketing, the two most popular are probably by using Google AdSense and what is called affiliate marketing. If you are not familiar with affiliate marketing, is simply selling someone else’s products and earning a commission on those sales much like an automobile salesperson earns a commission on each car that she or he sells.

More affiliate programs than you can shake a stick at

The truth is that you can find an affiliate program offering just about any kind of product or products you can imagine. The Internet’s 800-pound affiliate gorilla is Amazon.com. Once you become an affiliate of this company, you can sell just about virtually any product you can imagine from industrial-grade cement mixers to dog food. In fact, becoming an Amazon affiliate may be the fast and easy way to make money online.

You can even become an affiliate of Wal-Mart can sell all of its products. Or, if your strategy is to specialize in a market segment such as natural supplements, there are a number of companies to whom you can become an affiliate.

How to become an affiliate

The fastest and easiest way to become an affiliate is probably to go through a third party that specializes in aggregating affiliate programs. The biggest of these are probably Commission Junction (cj.com), Share-a-Sale (shareasale.com) and Linkshare (linkshare.com).

I call these websites aggregators because they literally aggregate affiliate programs from a number of different companies. Once you create an account with one of these third-part sites, you can then apply to become an affiliate of the companies they represent. Whether or not an individual company accepts you as an affiliate will depend largely on the nature of your site. For example, if you apply to become the affiliate of a company selling natural supplements and your site is all about baby strollers, chances are won’t be accepted as an affiliate. However, if your site is all about natural supplements and vitamins, the odds are you will be accepted.

How much can you earn through affiliate marketing?

This is a case where the sky is actually the limit. You can earn just about any amount of money through affiliate marketing the pending on how good a niche you find and how hard you are willing to work. There are entire online stores built around affiliate marketing that generate hundreds or even thousands of dollars a day in sales. In fact, if you search on just about any term on Google, chances are that at least one of the listings on Google’s results page will be a website or store built around affiliate marketing. For example, just search on the term natural supplements. You will most likely see a listing on the results page for nutrasanus.com

Another way to find affiliate programs

In addition to the third-party aggregators, you can often find affiliate programs for specific companies or products. You can do this by searching Google by your search term plus the word affiliates (natural supplements + affiliates). For example, if you search on natural supplements+ affiliates, the Google results page lists more than 10 companies in the natural supplements business that have affiliate programs. In most cases, you will need to apply to become an affiliate. As a general rule, you will need to scroll down to the very bottom of the company’s page and look for the term Affiliates. Click on this link and you will get all the information you need as to the company’s referral program, including what you need to do to become an affiliate and what commissions the company pays.
